Governor Carcieri's Record for Rhode Island

Since taking office in 2003, Governor Carcieri has been focused on the four pathways to prosperity for Rhode Island – Good Jobs, Good Schools, Good Government, and Good Place to Live. What he has accomplished is transforming the state.

In three years, Governor Carcieri has brought about meaningful reforms and positive changes to Rhode Island. In fact, 2005 was particularly notable as Governor Carcieri achieved several historic reforms for Rhode Island: reforming the state pension system, co-sharing health insurance costs with state employees, and the phase-out of the motor vehicle tax.


Changes in Rhode Island abound on many fronts:

• Good, high-paying, new jobs have been created in Rhode Island (more than 14,000 net new jobs since Governor Carcieri first took office) and there is currently $5 billion in development and construction underway throughout Rhode Island.
• At the State House, Governor Carcieri’s successful fight for Separation of Powers has increased the transparency in state government and has resulted in greater accountability to the people of Rhode Island. Governor Carcieri’s Fiscal Fitness initiatives have saved taxpayers more than $128 million and his pension reform plan is saving taxpayers $236 million over the next five years.
• In our schools, there is greater accountability in our classrooms and more funding for troubled and urban schools. Several of the Governor’s initiatives are underway that enable students to better learn the critical subjects of math and science.
• In the waters of Narragansett Bay and in the rolling open spaces that dot the state, our water is cleaner, there are improved protections for drinking water quality, and more than 8,400 acres of land have been preserved.

Good Jobs
Under Governor Carcieri’s watch, more than 14,000 net new jobs have been created. He continues to make Rhode Island an attractive place in which to do business.

Good Schools
Governor Carcieri has undertaken innovative math and science initiatives and provided funding for specialists to help in critical subjects.

Good Government
Separation of Powers, Fiscal Fitness initiatives, pension reforms, and co-sharing of health insurance by state employees are among the ways that Governor Carcieri is reforming state government.

Good Place to Live
Governor Carcieri is preserving and improving Rhode Island’s tremendous quality of life. Protecting the health of our bay and waterways, improving the roads and highways, providing greater affordable housing opportunities for low-income families, and providing the at-risk population with better protections and greater choice when it comes to health care are among Governor Carcieri’s achievements.
